Suicide attack on police

Blackmail Suspected in Girl’s Alleged Suicide

CHITRAL: A young married woman from Nishku village in Upper Chitral went missing about two weeks ago, and her dead body was recently recovered from the Chitral River near Ayun in Lower Chitral recently.

Police had initially registered a case against unknown persons on suspicion of abduction, but did nothing else. After her body was found by the riverside, social media users claimed that the girl had committed suicide by jumping into the river in her village.

They also alleged that the 23-year-old girl had left a letter accusing a man of threatening her after her marriage, mentioning his phone number.

Meanwhile, a police official in Upper Chitral told daily Dawn that the suspect was likely to be charged under Section 322 of PPC for qatl-bis-sabab (murder without intention).

He said the suspect was in a relationship with the girl before her marriage and had tried to blackmail her thereafter and even shared her pictures with her husband, resulting in her death by suicide.

“The police have viscera samples of the body for forensic analysis as well as a suicide note, purportedly left behind by her. In light of the statement of her father, the FIR will be revised as the deceased’s heirs have charged an accused directly. This case stands almost resolved,” he said.

On the other hand, the suicide note dated August 14 and written on a crumpled and torn-up piece of paper starts with calling the day her “last day.”

She mentioned a phone number, saying its holder would be responsible in case of her abduction or death. She signed off by writing her name.

Social media activists said that the girl ended her life because of blackmail by the man.

They have called for a thorough investigation into the case and action against the suspect. Many noted that similar cases in the past were not always fully investigated. They also highlighted the rising number of suicides among women, particularly young girls, in the region, often linked to blackmail or domestic violence.

Critics say that the police often do not take such cases seriously, frequently declaring them suicides and closing investigations, rather than ensuring the safety of women and holding perpetrators accountable.

Local community leaders and human rights activists have expressed deep concern over the incident, urging authorities to strengthen protective measures for women and girls in the region.

They emphasized the need for awareness campaigns, counseling services, and stricter enforcement of laws against harassment and blackmail, to prevent such tragedies in the future.
