Karim Damji Takes Charge as Dean of AKU Medical College

KARACHI, Aug 11: Professor Karim F. Damji took charge today as Dean of the Aga Khan University Medical College, Pakistan.

This follows his earlier appointment announced on June 25, 2025 by Chitral Today (link). At the time, it was confirmed he would succeed Dr Adil Haider and officially assume the position on August 11, 2025.

Prof. Damji is a global leader in glaucoma research and medical education. He brings more than 30 years of academic, clinical, and leadership experience to the role. He is the first Laila Endowed Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences at AKU.

He trained at the University of British Columbia, University of Ottawa, and Duke University, and holds an Executive MBA from Queen’s University. He previously chaired the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Alberta and directed its residency program. He now holds the title of Professor Emeritus.

Prof. Damji has led the Canadian Glaucoma Society and the Canadian Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology, and is Senior Editor of the Shields Textbook of Glaucoma. His research includes selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), teleglaucoma, stem cell therapy, and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.
