ISLAMABAD – August 4, 2025: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has warned that ongoing monsoon rains may trigger glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and flash flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) in the coming days.
According to the PMD, continued rainfall combined with rising temperatures could cause glacial lakes in northern mountainous areas to burst, posing serious risks to downstream communities. The department has also cautioned about the likelihood of landslides in high-altitude regions where the soil has become saturated.
“We urge communities in glaciated and flood-prone areas to remain vigilant,” a PMD spokesperson said. “Districts such as Chitral, Skardu, Hunza, and surrounding valleys may be particularly vulnerable.”In response, the PMD has directed all disaster response and emergency agencies to remain on high alert and ensure full preparedness to handle any potential emergencies.
The warning follows an earlier forecast predicting above-normal monsoon rainfall across Pakistan in August. The ongoing spell of rain has already led to rising water levels in rivers and increased pressure on glacial regions.
Residents are advised to monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel to mountainous or riverine areas, and follow any evacuation or safety instructions issued by local authorities.
