No minimum marriage age limit in Islam: Fazal

PESHAWAR: Molana Fazlur Rehman, head of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI), has strongly opposed the recently enacted Child Marriage Act in the Islamabad Capital Territory, describing it as contrary to the Quran and Sunnah.

Addressing a press conference in Peshawar, the JUI chief stated that Islam does not mandate a fixed minimum marriage age, and emphasized that the onset of puberty is the only requirement for marriage.

\”No law can be made in Pakistan that contradicts the Quran and Sunnah,\” he asserted.

Rehman criticized the legislation on minimum marriage age prohibiting marriage under the age of 18, calling it an attempt to secularize the country and undermine its Islamic identity. \”This law is making marriage difficult and opening the door to immorality,\” he warned.

He announced that the JUI would mobilize public opinion against the law through rallies across various provinces, and a major conference is scheduled in Hazara Division on June 29.

Taking aim at political rivals, he accused the PPP of trying to promote a secular image, and questioned the PML-N for supporting such legislation.

Commenting on the issue of corruption, Rehman claimed that the PPP’s protest was not about corruption itself, but about being surpassed in corruption records. He alleged that corruption in KP under the PTI government was rampant, and demanded a judicial inquiry into a reported Rs40 billion scam in Kohistan, of which Rs20 billion has allegedly been recovered.
