After govt failure to repair, locals close broken bridge

YARKHUN: The bridge (Pililyan Ser) in Shoosht, a vital lifeline for  upper Yarkhun and Broghil, has deteriorated to a dangerous level, prompting local residents to shut it down completely for public safety.

Constructed in 1997 by an NGO in response to the area’s isolation and lack of infrastructure, the bridge has served the community for 28 years. It facilitated the movement of thousands, including patients seeking medical care, students attending schools and traders conducting business.

However, the bridge has now become structurally unsound, posing a serious threat to human lives. The residents themselves took the step to close it down in order to prevent any tragic incidents.

However, despite this critical situation, there has been no visit, inspection, or response from the district administration, elected representatives, or any responsible institution so far.

The people of Upper Yarkhun and Broghil have appealed to the authorities concerned to take urgent notice of the situation.

The community demanded not only the immediate repair of the existing bridge but also the construction of a new RCC (Reinforced Cement Concrete) bridge that meets modern-day needs and can accommodate increasing traffic.

Citing the Unauch bridge tragedy in which eight lives were lost four years ago as a lesson, locals warn that inaction now may result in another avoidable loss of life. Should such a tragedy occur due to administrative negligence, the responsibility will fall squarely on the district authorities and elected officials.

\”This is not the time for verbal assurances or hollow promises,\” the residents emphasized told ChitralToday. \”We need practical steps and immediate action in the interest of public safety and welfare, not empty promises, \” they added.
