Chitral police underage drivers, bikes without number plates

Chitral police in action against errant bike riders

CHITRAL: Lower Chitral police have launched a crackdown against underage bike drivers and motorcycles without registration plates.

The police in a statement said that alongside the drive to create awareness about traffic rules District Police Officer Qamar Hayat has ordered action against underage motorcycle drivers and those driving bikes without number plates.

On the direction of the DPO, a traffic police team under the supervision of incharge traffic warden Nasirullah Khan launched the crackdown in Chitral town, Garam Chashma, Ayub and Drosh.

During the campaign, fine tickets were issued to 96 motorcyclists found driving without helmets and 25 underage motorcycle drivers.

The police also impounded 30 motorcycles in the police stations of Garam Chashma, Chitral, Ayun and Drosh after they were found without registration documents.

These bikes would be released after their owners produce registration papers issued by the excise office, said the police.

Underage and untrained bike riders have become a nuisance for road users in both Lower and Upper Chitral. Many people have lost their lives and limbs in accidents involving underage and untrained bike riders.

The police often launch similar action against the underage motorcyclists, but there has not been a permanent solution to the issue.
