Death sentence to Musharraf upheld

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has dismissed a set of appeals against a special court judgement to hang former military ruler Gen Pervez Musharraf till death in the high treason case against him.

The apex court upheld the special court ruling in the high treason case after rejecting the appeals.

“The impugned passed on January 13, 2020 by the Lahore High Court (LHC) […] is not sustainable and accordingly set aside,\” the court order announced by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa stated.

The high treason trial of the former military dictator for imposing the state of emergency on Nov 3, 2007, had been pending since December 2013.

Musharraf came to power after ousting then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a 1999 bloodless coup.

In an infamous purge in 2007, Musharraf imposed a state of emergency and placed several key judges under house arrest in Islamabad and elsewhere in Pakistan.

In January 2020, the Lahore High Court had declared the special court\’s sentencing of Musharraf on Dec 17, 2019, as illegal.

The appeals were filed by the late military ruler and others.

The special court led by the late chief justice of Peshawar High Court Justice Waqar Ahmed Seth was formed by the PML-N government (2013-18).

The special court in its ruling had directed law enforcers to apprehend Musharraf, then currently receiving medical treatment in Dubai, to ensure the death sentence was carried out.

But if found dead beforehand, \”his corpse (should) be dragged to D-Chowk, Islamabad, Pakistan, and be hanged for three days\”, it said.

  1. To be kind to him, a symbolic hanging ceremony should be held at his grave. Hope that will put some shame in where shame ought to be.
