River erodes agricultural land, houses in upper Chitral

RESHUN, July 23: The Yarkhun River has once again opened up its banks into residential areas eroding away houses and agricultural lands in upper Chitral. The most affected are the villages of Junali Koch and a hamlet Green Lasht near Reshun where already two houses have been evacuated by its inmates. The residents of the two houses owned by Khairullah and Khyali in Green Lasht took away their belongings leaving behind the buildings to be swept away by the river anytime. Local government officials including an assistant commissioner visited the area on Monday and distributed some tents among the affected residents and left. One of the residents while talking to www.chitraltoday.net that it was the negligence of the authorities concerned not to take effective steps before the river started eroding their precious lands. Some of the residents were seen cutting their fruit trees before being swept away.]]>
