Beijing, Sept 1, 2025 — Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled an ambitious plan to reshape the international system, urging nations to abandon Western-led governance and build what he called a fairer, multipolar world.
Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Tianjin, Xi urged countries to create an “equal and orderly multipolar world” and pursue “inclusive economic globalization.” He said countries should cooperate openly and share prosperity instead of allowing a few powers to dominate.
“History has entered a new stage where no single nation can dictate the rules,” Xi told delegates from member and partner states. “The world must advance toward mutual respect, openness, and win-win cooperation.”
Xi directly challenged U.S. influence by warning against “exclusive blocs,” a clear reference to NATO and Western alliances in Asia. He promoted the SCO as a platform that could shape a more representative global order. He pressed members to strengthen economic ties, expand infrastructure networks, and collaborate on technology and energy. He also called on them to fight terrorism, cybercrime, and separatism together, while resisting foreign interference in domestic affairs.
The SCO, which China and Russia founded in 2001, now includes India, Pakistan, and several Central Asian states. With Iran joining as a full member and other nations seeking closer ties, Xi framed the bloc as the core of a rising coalition of emerging powers.
Analysts say Xi’s push highlights Beijing’s determination to counter Western dominance and rally the Global South at a time of intensifying geopolitical rivalry.
