Fire Rips Through Historic Córdoba Mosque in Spain

CÓRDOBA (SPAIN): A massive fire engulfed Spain’s historic Córdoba Mosque, an 8th-century UNESCO World Heritage site, on Saturday.

Authorities are investigating the cause. Flames started in a small chapel inside the mosque’s main hall. They quickly climbed to the ornate wooden ceilings.

Firefighters battled the blaze for hours and brought it under control. Crews are now cooling the site to prevent re-ignition.

Known as the Mezquita, the mosque is one of Europe’s greatest Islamic monuments. It blends Moorish arches with Renaissance additions and attracts millions of visitors each year.

No one was injured. Officials have not yet assessed the full extent of the damage.
