US extradites Pakistani man to India

NEW DELHI: The United States has extradited 64-year-old Pakistani-origin Canadian citizen Tahawwur Hussain Rana to India for his alleged involvement in the 2008 Mumbai attacks.

Rana was flown to India on a special flight and taken into custody by teams from India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) and intelligence agency RAW. He is expected to appear before Delhi’s Patiala House Court under tight security.

India accuses Rana of being a member of the banned group Lashkar-e-Taiba and helping in planning the Mumbai attacks, which killed 166 people in 2008.

Earlier this year, former U.S. President Donald Trump had announced the decision to extradite Rana. The U.S. Supreme Court recently rejected his appeal to stay in the country, where he was already serving time for his role in planning another terror plot linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The extradition is seen as a major development in India’s long-standing demand for justice over the 2008 attacks.
