ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan on Wednesday dismissed a case filed against MPA from Upper Chitral and Deputy Speaker of KP assembly, her lawyer said.
Suriya Bibi along with her lawyer appeared in the ECP today and after hearing the commission dismissed the case, said Muhibullah Terichvi advocate.
The case was filed by certain Sher Khan in the ECP against Ms Suriya for not mentioning in her nomination papers a loan of Rs2 million she had taken from the KP Education Foundation for setting up a school. She also owed Rs1 million as an interest on the unpaid loan to the foundation.
However, Ms Suriya contended that she had sold the school to someone else along with the liabilities long ago.
However, the complainant did not appear before the commission today and in the last hearing.
According to a notice issued by the ECP last month, Suriya Bibi did not mention this loan in her nomination papers, and was summoned on August 21, 2024, for hiding facts from the commission. It said that her membership may be terminated under Article 62 and 63.
The deputy speaker had earlier told ChitralToday that the land acquired for the school was not in her name, it was in someone else’s name.
The ECP had raised a question about the school’s land being in her name, which was not the case.
“That’s why I didn’t disclose it. Someone else is running the school. I have no connection with it.”
She said her opponents were trying to malign her by filing an application against her about an issue that no longer existed.
Sources said that her opponents belonged to her own party, the PTI.
