The importance of education and the right type of education cannot be over-emphasized. If we are to make progress and take our rightful place in the world, we must have an educated and enlightened people.Quaid-e-Azam.

Encountering numerous students during exam season is very normal. The first statement they often make when one meets them and takes their question papers to see the questions is ‘Hall jam free sher.’ The pride with which they convey this news is intimidating, as it reveals the mindset they’ve developed after spending ten years in school. Few students feel crestfallen sharing this news; instead of feeling remorseful, they are over the moon sharing the condition of the hall in which they are given leeway to attempt the exams with the cheating materials they buy at the end of the year. If a student doesn’t feel any remorse after doing cheating, then it puts a big question marks in front of the education being provided.

Using the term ‘Jam-free hall’ after leaving the hall is no less than an achievement for them. It also reflects the standard of education being provided in our beloved country. When grades are prioritized over knowledge, when the rote learning system is not considered harmful, and when the youth become aficionados of futile activities, phrases like ‘hall jam-free’ and ‘check di no koniyn’ are not considered derogatory.
The prevalence of “Jam free halls”, a cheating culture, lackadaisical attitudes, and a lack of real interest in education, coupled with a focus solely on grades rather than genuine learning, are venoms injected into the minds of this generation. A proper overhaul of the education system is needed if we truly want to prepare them for a world that is advancing rapidly. Merely introducing Student Learning Outcomes (SLO) on paper, giving rhetorical speeches about bringing great change in education, focusing on quantity over promoting quality education, and distributing degrees and numbers to boost students’ confidence are like a poisoned chalice.
The onus also falls on teachers to instill a curiosity for real education among students . The notifications we see on a monthly or yearly basis for teachers, not allowing them to use mobile phones, but the other part remains missing, which should be promoting book reading culture, critical thinking and project based learning. Instead of focusing on developing the quest of students for real education, only focusing on completing and providing a ‘Jam free hall’ is tantamount to paralyzing the youth, which is considered the backbone of any nation, both mentally and physically.
