Sonia Shamroz becomes first woman AIG establishment

PESHAWAR: Sonia Shamroz Khan has been appointed as the first woman Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) Establishment Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, marking a significant milestone in the province’s law enforcement history.

Hailing from Abbottabad district, Ms Shamroz earlier served as the district police officer (DPO) Chitral and Battagram. She joined the police service in 2013 and has demonstrated exceptional leadership and policing skills.

Talking to ChitralToday, Ms Shamroz expressed her gratitude for the appointment to the keypost, emphasizing that female officers in the province were now receiving equal rights and opportunities compared to their male counterparts. 

She highlighted the province’s commitment to gender equality, stating that no recommendations or favors were sought or given for her appointment.

The newly-appointed AIG establishment has received international and national recognition for her services, including awards for her work in preventing forced marriages and violence against women.

Inspector General of Police Akhtar Hayat Khan praised Ms Shamroz’s appointment, stating that female police officers and officials wee being given special priority in the province. He noted that the trend of appointing female officers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had significantly increased over the past year.

Ms Shamroz’s appointment is a testament to the province’s commitment to gender equality and empowerment, paving the way for future generations of women in law enforcement.
