PEDO told to fix power crisis in Upper Chitral

PR

PESHAWAR: Deputy Speaker KP Assembly Suriya Bibi on Monday asked officials of PEDO to resolve the chronic electricity crisis in Upper Chitral on a priority basis.

Ms Suriya, member of the provincial assembly from Upper Chitral, held a meeting with chief executive officer of PEDO Jawad Haider and other officials in Peshawar. MNA Chitral Abdul Latif was also present on the occasion.

The deputy speaker told the officials that since February 8 snowfall, the power crisis in Upper Chitral had deteriorated and consumers were without electricity even in Ramazan.

She asked the PEDO officials to devise a power-sharing plan in consultation with the deputy commissioner of Lower Chitral and the resident engineer of Golen Gol powerhouse to resolve the chronic issue of electricity in Upper Chitral.

She also said that the poor supply network, especially the absolute transmission lines, needed urgent rehabilitation to resolved the power crisis in Upper Chitral.

Meanwhile, the deputy speaker also held a meeting with the chief executive officer of PESCO Akhtar Hameed and asked him to get the faulty tower at Lowari top repaired through which Chitral gets electricity from the national grid to overcome its shortage.

The total production in Chitral decreases to seven megawatts against the demand of nine megawatts in the winter.

The PESCO chief told the deputy speaker that the tower would be repaired when snow melts on the pass, hopefully in April.

It may be mentioned here that Chitral’s power crisis could not be resolved even after the commissioning of the 108 megawatts Golen Gol power project which has now become a white elephant due to poor planning and faulty construction.

People of Upper Chitral are without electricity and like in the past have again warned of protests, but the elected representatives just issue statements on social media giving an impression that everything would be fine as they wish.

Similar efforts had been adopted by former MNAs Iftikharuddin and Abdul Akbar, but the power issue deteriorated day by day.

After being elected on February 8 this year, none of the elected representatives has even bothered to visit Chitral where people suffered lots of issues, especially after the unprecedented snowfall in the first week of this month.
