Four killed as flash floods devastate Shishi Koh

DROSH: At least four people were confirmed dead and scores of others missing during flash floods that washed away a number of houses and other properties in Azeerbekan Deh of Shishi Koh on Friday.

Sources in the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital Drosh confirmed to ChitralToday that four dead bodies had been brought to the hospital.

Rescue 1122 Lower Chitral added that its staff reached the affected area and rescued 40 people who were stranded after the deluge.

Rescue 1122 said the dead bodies of the four persons who lost their lives in the flood were recovered and shifted to the THQ hospital.

They were identified as Nasreen Bibi, wife of Noor Azam, Hazrat Umar, son of Zerbali, Ghulam Faqir, son of Khair Malik and an unidentified man. 

The emergency service said two houses and one madressa were also damaged by floods in the Fursad village of Shishi Koh. More details could not be gathered due to lack of communication in the remote valley.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority said that heavy rain induced flash floods in three areas of Pursad, Purgal and Gorin Gole of Shishikoh valley in which five people were killed.

It said that as per initial reports, five bodies had been recovered with four of them identified so far.

The PDMA statement said that floods also damaged houses and properties of people.

It has been learnt that flash floods have cut off many villages from each other and the residents are unable to communicate with the outside world in Shishi Koh.

Meanwhile, the office of the DC Lower Chitral said many people while putting their life at risk were seen collecting wood from the flooded Shishi river and there were also reports of some of them being swept away.

The district administration officials visited the area at night and warned the locals not to endanger their life, adding Section 144 was already imposed on collection of wood from rivers.

On Saturday, at least 10 people were arrested for violating the ban abd collecting wood from the flooded Shishi Koh river.

Moreover, in Brep Upper Chitral, three houses were damaged when Darkhot Gol flooded again. The houses belonged to those who were rendered homeless in 2007 and in 2013.

Five houses were also washed away in Khuz lower while flash floods in Parkusab Gol blocked the flow of river Yarkhun endangering a bridge between Chuinj and Perkusab villages.
