Brep again hit by flash floods

BREP: Houses and crops along with orchards were damaged after torrential rains triggered flash floods in Brep on Wednesday night.

Flash floods and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) have wrecked havoc in different parts of Chitral within the last about three weeks.

After a long dry spell, there was a localized torrential rain in Brep that triggered flash flooding in a nullah. The flood damaged houses, crops, fruit trees, a saw machine and tractor in Zangoguch and Aliabad localities of Brep, local people told ChitralToday. 

Meanwhile,  flash flooding also devastated private properties including houses and standing crops in Terich lower of Upper Chitral. Owners of the damaged houses were forced to spend night under the open sky. 

The affected people have called upon the government to assess the damages and provide financial assistance to them for rehabilitation. 

Floods had devastated Brep village in 2015. About 40 houses along with standing crops and fruit trees as well as shops schools and healthcare centres were washed away in the Brep village of upper Chitral. A govt middle school for girls was also damaged.

The reports said floods occurred both in Darkhot and Chhikan Gols of the village on Monday afternoon and caused large scale destructions. The village could not be reached or crossed as it was inundated with floodwater, boulders and debris.

In 2007, floods in the Darkhot Gol had destroyed scores of houses rendering 30 families homeles. Some of the affected people had reconstructed their hosues which were again washed away by the latest floods. Most of the 2007 flood affectees are still homeless.
