BOONI: People of different areas in Upper Chitral on Monday took to the streets against unending power crisis in their area.
The power protesters blocked the Chitral-Shandur road at different points including Charun, Green Lasht. As a result, commuters between Upper and Lower Chitral got stranded.
They said the protest would continue till the government resolved the issue on a permanent basis.
They demanded that 20 percent of the 108 megawatts of Golen Gol powerhouse should be reserved for Upper Chitral otherwise a sit-in would be held at the powerhouse.
Addressing the protest gatherings, the speakers said since floods damaged the Reshun powerhouse in 2015, Upper Chitral had been facing the crisis but the government was not serious in resolving the issue.
They said the issue was raised in different forums, including the National Assembly, but residents of Booni and other areas still faced outages extending to over 15 to 20 hours at a stretch daily.
They said despite commissioning of the 108 megawatt Golen Gol powerhouse, Upper Chitral was not being provided electricity due a row between PESCO and PODO.
The residents of Booni and other areas such as Parwak and Mastuj have been protesting for years but there is no end to the power crisis in the area.
