CHITRAL: Forest department guards arrested seven persons after foiling their attempt to smuggle timber worth millions of rupees out of Chitral in three trucks at Baradam checkpost, a senior official told ChitralToday.
He said a case has been registered against the seven persons who all belonged to Upper Dir district. One of their facilitators belonging to Kalkatak Chitral has also been booked.
Divisional Forest Officer Sardar Farhad told ChitralToday that on a tip-off that some people were smuggling timber after concealing them in trucks beneath bags of maize, barrier keeper Farhad Alam at Baradam was alerted. The staff at the checkpost stopped the trucks for checking and in the meantime the smugglers in a 2D reached there and unsuccessfully tried to bribe the staff.
Later, senior officials reached the spot and handed over the suspects to police.
The police after registering a case under different sections of the law presented the suspects in court which sent them to jail on judicial remand.
The forest department on Thursday arranged a function in Drosh in which Farhad Alam and his colleagues were given commendation certificates and cash awards for checking the illegal activity.
