Ismailis left out of govt’s honorarium for prayer leaders

Cheques given to prayer leaders, Kalash qazis

CHITRAL: Cheques were distributed among prayer leaders of mosques, qazis of Kalash and Christian community’s religious leaders at Town Hall here on Tuesday. However, the Ismaili community was ignored in the distribution of honorarium.

Though the population of Kalash and the Christian communities is too negligible in Chitral, the second largest Ismaili community has been left out and discriminated against by the government in allocation of the monthly stipend.

Cheques for Rs10,000 each were handed over to 409 prayer leaders of mosques, 73 Kalash qazis and two Christian fathers at the function attended by chief minister’s special assistant Wazirzada Kalash and local PTI leaders.

Speaking on the occasion,  District Bar Association Lower Chitral President Niaz A. Niazi said Mukhis or Qazis of the Ismaili community’s Jamat Khanas should also be given the stipend announced by the government.

It may be noted that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government decided to grant honorarium to prayer leaders of mosques across the province from July 1, 2021.

Around 22,000 prayer leaders will be granted monthly honorarium of Rs10,000 each. The provincial government will spend an amount of Rs23 million per month and Rs2.5 billion per annum on the scheme.
