Sustainability of GLOF project stressed

PESHAWAR: United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative in Pakistan Knut Ostby has said Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (Glof) risk reduction was an important project for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, keeping in view the rapidly melting glaciers due to climate change.

A statement issued here said that Mr Ostby met the provincial secretaries for relief, rehabilitation and settlement and agriculture departments and other officials to discuss UNDP’s current portfolio and multi-sectoral support to the government.

It said that progress made by Glof-II project through relevant line departments was discussed, along with the project’s future interventions.

The Glof-II project currently targets eight districts in the province including Upper Chitral, Lower Chitral, Dir Upper, Swat, Mansehra, Upper Kohistan and Lower Kohistan. 

Mr Ostby highlighted the importance of project sustainability and asked all relevant line departments to serve at the forefront to implement the scheme in the best possible manner.

The statement said that the discussions also focused around areas of rule of law, administrative and financial integration of tribal districts, SDGs mainstreaming and localisation, electoral support, social inclusion, eco-tourism, youth, women empowerment and economic development.

It said that Mr Ostby supported UNDP’s commitment to work together with the provincial government to help find solution to ongoing development challenges.–Dawn
