Audit of foreign fund spent on setting up of playground demanded

CHITRAL: A political activist from Yarkhun has demanded an audit of foreign funds spent on the establishment of a new playground in which the annual Broghil festival is held every year.

Talking to ChitralToday correspondent GH Farooqui, ruling PTI activist Zar Bahar Akhonzada said in the past the locals celebrated an annual festival in a lush green ground in Broghil where existed no dust or soil on or near the ground.

But a few years ago, an NGO was given Rs80 million foreign fund which established the new ground in a barren land. Instead of the locals, now the tourism department and the district administration are arranging the annual event.

The new ground has no greenery and there is no grass either on the ground or the sitting area.

As a result, when any game is held in the ground, there is dust all around.

He said the government should order an audit of the fund to ascertain how it was utilized, as the ground lacks basic facilities.

Moreover, it should also be investigated why the ground was established in the barren land instead of developing the natural playground.

Festival fails to attract spectators

The Broghil festival 2020 failed to attract tourists due to the wrong timing and poor condition of the road to the area.

Even local people did not take interest and during the two days there were very few people seen at the venue.

Some locals told ChitralToday that the Broghil festival should by organized in July or August when the weather in the area remains pleasant.

After August, the weather turns cold as the area is located at an elevation of 1,4000 feet above sea level.

The holding of the two-day festival on Sept 12-13 and damages to the already poor road due to flash floods in different parts of Yarkhun in August kept away tourists from the event.
