BANG: Scores of students from different villages of Yarkhun valley held a protest rally here demanding the government should arrange 3G internet facility in their area so that they can attend online classes during the COVID-19 pandemic/closure of educational institutions in the country.

The students said only Telenor mobile service was available in most parts of Upper Chitral but its already poor internet service was not available in Yarkhun valley, which is the most remote area of Chitral.

They said after the educational institutions were closed in all cities due to the coronavirus pandemic, they have been sitting idle in their home villages as their hostels were also shut.

Now the colleges and universities have launched online classes but due to the unavailability of internet facility students in most parts of Chitral were unable to attend classes.

The participants of the rally said they cannot afford moving back to cities amid the pandemic and stay in hotels to attend online classes, and were left in the lurch as without internet they cannot attend their online classes in Yarkhun valley.

The students said if the government did not arrange internet facility in their areas on a  emergency basis, they will lose their academic year.

The protesters were carrying placards and chanting slogans for acceptance of their demands.

They later dispersed and said if their demand for internet facility in Yarkhun was not met they would extend their protest as they were left with no other option in order to save their future.–Abdul Nasir Khan
