Chitral reports first death from coronavirus

BOONI: A personnel of Chitral Scouts tested positive for COVID-19 in Booni, Dr Sardar Nawaz of the Tehsil Headquarters (THQ) Hospital told ChitralToday.

He said the scouts personnel was stationed at the Mastuj post and was on leave. He belongs to Peshawar and upon his return from leave was quarantined at the Govt Degree College Booni.

Dr Nawaz said sample taken from the Chitral Scouts jawan had been sent to Peshawar and the result on Tuesday showed he was infected with the virus.

With the new patient, the total number of positive cases in Upper Chitral increased to 10.

However, seven of them have already been sent home after recovering from the disease.

In Lower Chitral, the first case was reported on April 19 and the district registered 40 positive cases. of these, 23 have recovered and sent home.

The new patient is being treated at the emergency response centre set up by an NGO in Booni. The centre was inaugurated on May 19.

Officials said COVID-19 testing facility will also be available at the centre by July this year.

It may be noted that there is no coronavirus testing facility in whole Chiyral and samples have to be taken to Peshawar at a distance of about 400 km for testing.
