First coronavirus patient reported in Chitral
PESHAWAR: The first coronavirus patient has been reported in Chitral.
A 48-year-old man identified as Shahabuddin, a domicile holder of Upper Dir, has tested positive for COVID-19.
His samples were sent from District Headquarters Hospital Chitral to the Public Health Reference Lab Peshawar which announced the result today.
A spokesman for the DC Lower Chitral also confirmed to ChitralToday the first positive case of coronavirus in the district.
Sources told ChitralToday that Shahabuddin, a Pashtoon fruit seller living in Chew Dok, had gone on Tableegh and returned to his home in Chitral on a truck avoiding being checked and quarantined.
When someone complained about him to the district administration, he was quarantined as per the government advisory on the disease during which he developed symptoms of the virus.
The patient was referred to the District Headquarters Hospital Chitral from where his samples were sent to Peshawar.
So far, Chitral was free of the virus and this is the first confirmed COVID-19 case.
Earlier, scores of patients had tested negative for the virus in both the districts of Chitral.
It is very disturbing that there is not even a single testing centre in both Lower and Upper Chitral without which a true picture of the situation cannot be determined.
Thousands of people have returned to their home villages in Chitral from different parts of the country but in case of an outbreak the local hospitals are very poorly equipped to cope with the issue.
Very sad news for all of us. The focus now should be on stoping further spread of the virus. The affacted patient should be treated with affaction instead of criminalising him as has been the cae with some corona patients in two big cities. All his contacts should traced and tested immediately and their further moment be ristricted to avoid further spread. The time has come that chitralis must take on to themselves the responsibility of their protection instead of leaving every thing entirely to the administration. They will not care for you as you care for your self and your people. Every single resident of chitral shoud now rise to the ocassion and shoulder his/her part of the responsibility by being more vigilant than before. Report the suspected cases to authorities concerned and keep a vigilant eye arround you. Keep an eye on the entry points snd make sure that no non chitrali enters the district from outside. Section 144 should be imposed in case it has been lifted or eased and implemented in letter and spirit. If need be, a curfew can also be imposed to make sure social distancing and implement other required protocols. No chitrali will die of hunger. Lastly our face book intelectuals and political workers with their affilations with political parties should stop posts for point scoring and to demean each other. They all should shut their mouth and concentrate their efforts and energies on fighting covid 19. God help and protect us all.

This was expected sooner or later; the example was set by the Commissioner Malakand himself by bringing an outsider with Utility stores supplies as a cheap publicity stunt for that man and himself. All protocols of social distancing were crushed right under the local administration’s’ nose; rather under their patronage. God knows who came from where? Moreover, Someone uploaded a Police Officer’s selfie with the cricketer on fb, without mask, dismissing the social distancing guidelines altogether. First the state machinery should lead by example then the public will follow.
