Holding of Broghil festival in Muharram resented

BOONI: Local people have expressed their reservations over the holding of three-day Broghil festival (Sept 6-9) in the mourning month of Muharram, that too just before Ashura.

The event was to be held in August but later the Tourism Corporation of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (TCKP) and the Upper Chitral district administration announced that it would be held from Sept 6 to 9 without realizing that it would be the mourning month of Muharram.

Now all arrangements are in place and some people have even started their journey to Broghil to take part in the festival.
The festival would feature various activities, including polo, cricket, football, buzkashi, yak polo, donkey polo, marathon race, tug-of-war, wrestling, music and other traditional games.
The organizers said yak race, yak polo, fireworks, traditional music and food shows would be the main features of the festival.
Talking to ChitralToday, environment activist Rehmat Ali Jaffar Dost said the festival should have been organized before the start of Muharram or after the end of Ashura.
He appealed to the TCKP and the district administration of Upper Chitral to postpone the event keeping in view the fact that no festivities are held in Muharram.
