Environment activists say Chitral highly vulnerable to climate change

ISLAMABAD: Environment activists, political and civil society representatives at a gathering highlighted climate change vulnerabilities of Chitral and also called upon the PTI government to take action against the timber mafia that has been active in the valley for years.

They had gathered at a cleanliness drive arranged by Chitral Heritage and Environment Protection Society (CHEPS) at Shakarparian in Islamabad. Minister of State for Climate Change Zartaj Gul was the chief guest.

A large number of students, professionals and members of civil society along with minority MPA from Chitral Wazirzada, PTI Chitral President Addul ALtif, General Secretary Israr Saboor, Sartaj Aziz and Sultan Mehmood.

Highlighting the vulnerabilities of Chitral, Israr Saboor said these were direct cause of climate change. He requested the minister to take action against the timber mafia in the valley. He also discussed the potential of Chitral in clean and renewable energy generation, adding Chitral was capable of producing 4,000 megawatts of electricity.

The participants also offered fateha for Khalid bin Wali, who passed away in a road accident. He was a founding member of CHEPS.

A research paper focusing vulnerabilities of Chitral due to climate change was presented to the minister by Abdul Latif.

Ms Zartaj Gul appreciated the efforts of CHEPS and said the PTI government was giving importance to climate change and taking the issue very seriously. She said Imran Khan is highly concerned about climate change and wants every individual to play their role.

The billion tree tsunami in KP is an example of Imran Khan’s vision and his concern. She said now they have taken up the billion tree tsunami project at the national level under which 10 billion saplings would be planted nationwide.
