PHC approached to get Kabul River renamed

CHITRAL: A resident of Chitral has approached the Peshawar High Court (PHC) seeking directions to authorities concerned to get the centuries-old misnomer as regards to the Kabul river.

In his application addressed to the chief justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC), Sher Jahan Sahil said the river originated in the extreme north of Chitral and after passing through the over 300 km long valley entered the territory of Afganistan at Chitral’s Arandu area.

In Afghanistan, this river of Chitral passes through Asmar, Kumar, Asadabad, Ghaziabad and Jalalabad and then again enters Pakistan.

Strangely, the river is called River Kabul when it enters Pakistan near Peshawar. It is a complete misnomer because this river coming from Chitral through the eastern part of Afghanistan has nothing to do with Kabul, the capital of Afghanistan.

This historical and geographical misnomer is among the main factors behind the backwardness and deprivation of the people of Chitral, Mr Sahil contended.

He requested the chief justice to issue directions to the authorities concerned to get the geographical misnomer corrected and name the river as River Chitral.
