An upsetting experience
How hypocrite it might mirrored me to the good men with ‘kind’ intentions there is no telling except that I could not help detesting and foiling their attempt at coaxing me into a gentler spirit. The thought that only Torkhow is plagued with such wicked practice would be plainly wrong. Almost every examination center in Chitral is under the bad influence of the rampant encouragement and use of unfair means in the examination (with the exemption of AKU-EB examination). Though their ill actions have always been thwarted by the stern on duty superintendents and invigilators yet it is the presence of still some black sheep amongst them; the local peoples’ consistent support and high opinion of cheating and its translating into the prevalent foul play of students’ and their reliance on it is menacing. Little does the society today realize that by blindly advocating cheating in the examination it is deteriorating it’s children’s future rather than uplifting it. Trying to aid them in increasing numbers simply would put their career into jeopardy. How a student today would cope with the competitive time in the wake of his/her pseudo matriculation. Even if the false high scored degree allow him an entry into a reputed college, what after that? The pretentious lease of survival will choke him. To come back to the examination center at Shagram is to relate the searching of the students prior letting them into the hall for the paper. The invigilators would recover from them piles of pieces of unfair means to my discomfort. In my heart I would utter helplessly… ‘Someone hold me while I faint at the luxuriant waste of books and paper’. I myself exacted the recovery of the remaining pieces with them during the paper with such clarity as to leave them uncertain almost to absurdity. (Or it might have seemed to me so, for they used to come out of the hall gleefully at the end) While performing the paperwork on the desk I marveled at the students scribbling before me. If only they were mannered and accustomed to the observance of silence and at using their brain and creativity from this very initial stage! If only there were no existence of the notion of getting readymade things to rust their brain and render it dysfunctional! The more I lamented when I saw through their concept of belittling the matriculation examination. They appeared to think of doing it away over a cup of tea. It seemed they experienced not the excruciatingly painful hours of preparation. Their midnight oil they appeared never to have burnt. Their days it looked they passed in loitering. What a pity it is! Doing matriculation no longer stood a formidable task to accomplish for today’s generation unlike to those over a decade earlier. The more wide their world, the more the various sources accessible to them, the more limited their grip and the more indolent they themselves. I looked for a way out of my discomfiture, but there did not appear to be any. I had to go through the anguish till the end of the examination. Annoyed by the unjust pleadings of the people and disheartened by the students’ corrupt mindset I in an impulse decided never again to venture for any exam duty. But on the second thought acknowledging the worthy charge, I solemnly submitted myself to always be ready to curb every modus operandi of their cheating. I pledged also to purge their state of mind as far as I could do on my part. P.S. If all the concerned public and private officials could make the same pledge and see to its enactment, if they could inspire them through effective expressions ,advice and actions and if the KP’s flourishing education system could make the exam monitoring more effective ,together we can go a long way in eradicating the notion of cheating from their minds. Once we have fair and honest students, society’s urge and wrong endeavours would automatically fall flat upon the examiners as well as the examinees. The conventional mass mindset would inevitably fade farther in the background.]]>
It seems madame was tasked with an errand which even Hercules would refuse after accomplishing his 12 labors. Also, it is a guideline for other teachers on how to behave oneself while on examination duty and resist the temptation offered by the “unschooled” villagers and “corrupt” students. The journey of death undertaken by the brave supt of examination to handle such a “critical” situation is an eye opener for those teachers who oversee examination in the settled district of KP and FATA and complain of pressure from political leaders, feudal lords and delinquent youth who don’t hesitate of carrying arms into examination hall. Coping with the barbarians of Torkhow in such an unyielding way, with impeccable sophistication deserves to be written in golden words in the history of Chitral. keep up the good work.
BISE officials directly involved in the practice of cheating and they promote this menace in education system for their own vested interest. First they develop bookish paper to make it easy for cheating and after that they nominate their blue eyes for examination duties after getting their own share of commission. And the examiner on duty share the things with BISE officials after the examination and this evil nexus of “Booti Mafia” persist in our society for the last many years. If there is conceptual question paper instead of reproducing the book question in the paper this menace can be controlled up to some extent. But controlling cheating is not in the interest of BISE officials and especially clerical staff, therefore they will not make the process transparent and objective. And we have to survive with this rotten system until BISE is here, if present system is replaced with new system of evaluation after taking weaknesses of BISE into consideration then the process can be make full proof otherwise we have to survive with this system.
Respected Ma’am……!!!!
How could you expect a fair examination in a center which is far flung and far away from chitral city e.g Shagram???The centers in Chitral city are even more pathetic and mediocre, the same awkward practices are in its peak in chitral city examination centres,as i appeared in the last year inter examination. What I mean to say is our whole examination system is overwhelmed by this gruesome act. The only solution of this menace of cheating and to eradicte it is the introduction of fair examination boards i.e AKU-EB .
Ma’am at last but not the least I wish you could had visited the examination centres in chitral city than talk about Shagramis (natives of shagram)……
The article could have been shorter and crispier but the views put forward by the good lady teacher are very noble. Our society is fermented to the core. Cheating in exams is considered a norm whereas actually it is the biggest of sins in the context of Huqooq ul Ibaad which is unforgivable. The product of cheating are cheats and these cheats let others cheat and thus the whole society becomes composed of cheats (noble exceptions aside).
The article is a lesson and an example for those who never take step without a bolus of ice and a leg piece of chicken to pursue his particular responsibility.who are you?where are you from? But it is a substantial message that what our society is providing us to be involve in such kind activities and then to expect to bring a huge evolution.
Thank you teacher.
