This narration comprises three parts, the first is the use of fossil fuel in Pakistan which it buys from Arabian Peninsula to produce a torque in its economy. According to 3rd M&E report of ministry of petroleum in between 2014-2015 Pakistan consumed 2215 matric tons of fossils fuel which was most dominantly used by power stations and if it begin to contribute carbon emission at the rate of 5% of total global emission and by 2030 the total consumption rate may hick to 400 million tons. This emission is totally coming from industrial sectors, apart from this automobiles, are consuming half of fossil fuel, emissions from households, and other chemical burning, causing a rigid dilemma for us, how to sustain environment and to develop our energy sector without utilizing fossil fuel. Before align of Chitral with the rest of newly formed Pakistan there were only few vehicles for transportation and now we have more than 5000 NCP automobiles running in the region without checking their octane number and knocking and have a very bad impact on the current environment.
The second point is climate impact in Pakistan and the visual evidence of it is an increase in water level by 2cm, melting and retraction of our glaciers, abrupt and intense torrential rain falls, rapid ripping of fruits and raise in temperature are the unforeseen phenomenon happening now a days. According to IPCC report Pakistan is among top three vulnerable countries who are exposed to Climate Change and its impacts. If we look at Pakistan total carbon consumption rate, which is 0.1% which is very least and among the world 192 countries Pakistan is rapidly moving to the Climate change red zone. PMD recent report says that out of 3044 glaciers lake 36 are the most dangerous once that are in reconnaissance of better time to happen in both Chitral and BG but if we also look at the historical profile of Pakistan in 2010-2015 we suffered from foods, and in 2014 we faced heat wave in Sindh province and apart from this we faced drought in 2009 in Baluchistan and some part of Sindh province. Till to day we have lost much more that we had lost in war on terrorism and still we are in a progressive mood of losing without knowing or feeling that Impact.
Actually if we are looking about the shown impact of climate change is more dominant in our mountainous ranges KP, specially Chitral and GB because all the reservoir of all fresh water are present in these region and through outing from these area these rivers and big channel cause deterioration in down basins. This event is caused an estimate loss of about $ 55 million from 1995-2015 according to global risk report. In the form of land destruction, property, their livelihoods. As we are looking the impact shown by the fury climate change our glaciers, ice packs, low high intensity rain falls and early ripping of grapes, scarcity of water by climate change exacerbation. I remember that days, we slept in our houses in upper Chitral and after the period of 18-19 year now the peoples are using electric fans in their residential places.
The third and the last point is what are the opportunity we have in “Energy transition” in Pakistan. As we know that Pakistan is working on climate change and had conducted many symposium in different time and include peoples from different sector of life but rarely included the transporter and other who are dealing or working in fuel sector. They are also not been included into decision making process, but so many time like increasing or decreasing of petroleum price they may held urgent meeting but we haven`t seen any caliber institute had discussed on inclusion of climate change and had called an urgent meeting. We all are now egoist and we are keeping more than 2-3 vehicle in our houses despite we the only one can full fill our needs. Government should convict this issue as a law violation against the terms in EIA. These are all our misfortune and we have to change these into an opportunity. In this aspect Pakistan in close collaboration with I/NGOs is doing some mitigation work in its most parts but it is not enough, we need indeed reduction in carbon consumption by building more hydro-power in KpK, and GB because this is most cheapest source for our energy transition, without hampering or making it political, otherwise we will loss more and the glacier did not remain ever more. Construction of more tidal power, wind powers, and more use of solar panels in most part. We need mini afford in harmonizing our industrial sectors by establishing mega solar panels and more focusing on renewable energy source.
