Training workshop on GLOF ends

CHITRAL:  A three-day training workshop on Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) concluded at a local hotel. valleyAdditional Assistant Commissioner Chitral Abdul Akram was chief guest on the concluding ceremony. The workshop was organized by GLOF project for local media persons to sensitize them regarding vulnerability of assets and people living beneath the glacier areas. Mohammad Saleem,  Deputy Director Media & Communication Climate Change Division, Mohammad Umar Sheikh, communication specialist and Hameed Mir, were the facilitators of the training. The press stringers were also taken to Bando Gol valley which is under threat of glacier floods.  The valley was damaged by floods in 2010 where hundreds of acres of land were damaged by erosion and three people were killed. The Glof project was constructing protection bund on flood nulla side as well as seven safe havens in the area to provide safe protection and shelter to local community in case of flood and natural disaster. Talking to this scribe, local people complained that there was no hospital, high school, college or road in the valley. Local people said that Glof project will be closed in 2015 after launching a number of protection schemes.  They demanded the federal and provincial governments as well as donor agencies construct schools, colleges, hospitals and roads in the valley.]]>
