Merit scholarships given to students

HUNZA, July 1: The Milky Way Youth Movement held a ceremony at the higher secondary school Hunza to award nine meritorious student scholarships for the academic year 2014 to 2015. The ceremony was attended by a large number of students, teachers, principal, Milky Way GB head and members. The scholarships were launched in March 2014 after Milky Way won a competition arranged by GM Baig Trust for Human Development and 37 students applied from the school. A series of interviews were held and finally nine students were given the prestigious scholarship. The students were: Anita Baig, Shamsia Bibi, Asifa, Sajida Parveen, Noshida Rehman, Asma Jabeen, Rabia Faqir, Neha Baig and Marina Akhter. Milky Way is a volunteer youth led education movement founded by a child rights activist Shah Zaman which is actively supporting the needy and talented students in Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral regions in the northern side of Pakistan since 2010. Currently, it is supporting 105 students in different prestigious institutions of both the regions including all the higher secondary schools and Gilgit College of Commerce and Economics. It is also running a Montessori academy “Milky Way Academy” and a community library “Milky Way Wisdom Center.” Addressing the ceremony, head of GB chapter Sajid Ali Khan shed light on the history of Milky Way and its role in promoting the youth through social activism with its slogan “Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s Youth” for the last four years. He shared many success stories of Milky Way scholars and advised the new scholars to work hard in order to fulfill the expectations that Milky Way has now attached with them. The acting principal expressed her immense happiness and thankfulness for supporting her students. She also advised the students to work harder now as with the receiving of the scholarships greater responsibility rests on their shoulders and prayed for their success.
