UNDP arrival in Chitral welcomed

This is an admitted fact that government fund is not that much enough to meet the increasing need of the area. Hence coming of NGOs to meet the need is a blessing for the people. The leading NGOs that developed Chitral are Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) working in Chitral for improving the living condition of the people during the much needy days. We the people also know that following AKDN many other NGOs entered Chitral and did excellent job for the people of Chitral. These included Sarhad Rural Support Programme (SRSP), CADP, CIADP and many others. Chitral located in between famous mountain ranges always at the risk of floods, snow avalanches and earthquakes. The residential houses are on the banks of rivers and the streams. The streams flow in middle of the villages, always threatening house settlements and there are cases that villages with all their people, houses, livestock, land with standing crops were washed away or buried under the flood, heavy boulders and snow avalanches. The Focus Humanitarian Assistance of the AKDN has also done and is doing remarkable jobs providing assistance directly to the affected people and preparing others to meet natural calamities through awareness programmes. And the UNDP is also in Chitral with technology and support for saving the villages from disasters caused by glacial lake outburst flood that is always threatening the people in some of the villages. We are fortunate that UNDP is in Chitral and it has done an excellent job and it is believed that villages like Gohkir in upper Chitral and villages down in the district are protected from glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF). The UNDP project seems to be more sustainable simply because its officials involved local community and made community its owners. Giving ownership to local community no doubt shall be a sustainable project. Chitrali people look towards UNDP to continue its projects saving the lives, their farmland, residential houses and sources of living that always were threatened by glacial lake outburst floods. These villages are Chitral Town, Drosh, Booni, Reshun, Charun, Mastuj, Sarghuz Laspur, Brep, Dizg/Khruzg, Phashk, Meragram-2, Wasum/Zhupu, Yarkhunlasht and Sivaht, Royee in UC Garum Chashma.
