Female teacher commits suicide, girl drowns

CHITRAL: A female schoolteacher allegedly committed suicide by jumping into river in Charun village on Wednesday morning.

Police spokesman Inspector Buzurguddin said the reasons behind the incident were yet to be ascertained, adding the local police had started an investigation. He said the suicide victim, in her early 40s, was married to Jafar Khan of the Charun village and had four children. She was posted at the Government Girls Primary School, Lone.

A villager of Charun, requesting not to be named, said the female teacher was mentally disturbed and under treatment for the last many years. She had also tried to commit suicide a few years back, he added.

The body of the victim was retrieved from the river in the afternoon and will be buried on Thursday after the arrival of her children from Peshawar. The husband of the deceased is employed in a private firm in Dubai (UAE).

Meanwhile, a 10-year-old school girl from Awi Lasht died after a makeshift bridge over the river collapsed while she along with two other girls was crossing it near Booni.

Police sources identified the deceased as Sana, 10. The two other girls were Wasima (13) and Basima (11), residents of Booni Lasht. They were going to Awi village situated on the other side of the river when the incident occurred.–Zahiruddin
