Chitrali prince becomes Governor of Kunar

CHITRAL, July 16: An Afghan national of Chitrali origin has been appointed as the Governor of the Kunar province of Afghanistan.

Shujaul Mulk Jalala also known as Ghulam Rasul is the great grandson of Amanul Mulk II, one of the most powerful Mehtars of Chitral in the late 19th century. When due to some dispute, his forefathers were exiled to Afghanistan the then rulers in Kabul settled the family at Jalala in Kunar.

Since then they have been living in Kunar, playing an effective role in the politics of the troubled country.

Ghulam Rasul was earlier also elected as the member of Aghan Shura (parliament) and worked as an adviser to Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

It may be noted that due to its geographical proximity, people of Chitral and Kunar have long been interacting with each other in different fields.

Before the construction of the Lowari Tunnel, Chitralis used the Kunar route via the Nawa pass to travel to and from other parts of the country in winters. The influential Katur family of Chitral settled in Jalala area of the Kuanar province always worked to ensure that the people of Chitral sued the route in winter without being harmed.
