Sheshi Koh valley to get flood protection wall
CHITRAL, March 19: Construction work on a protection wall has been started in the Sheshi Koh valley to save the low-lying villages from floods. [caption id="attachment_8792" align="alignleft" width="259"] River erosion in Chitral.–File[/caption] The Sarhad Rural Support Program (SRSP) would execute the project with the community participation at a cost of Rs3.3 million. The work would be completed before the rise of water level in the summer. In a cheque giving ceremony held in the valley, the regional programme coordinator Tariq Ahmed, said the flash flood in the stream flowing through the valley had washed away hundreds of acres of fertile land two years ago increasing poverty in the already poverty stricken area. He said the organization had undertaken the project of erecting protection walls in five different places of the valley while the work will be carried out on community participation basis for which the local community had been organized. He said the area is known for its vegetable products on commercial scale and had the leverage to provide sustenance to the farmers of the area. The project, he said is being financed by Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Program and a German organization kfw. On this occasion, the social ogranizer of the project, Javed Ahmed also spoke about the role of community in the rural development. Local elites Maulana Mohammad Ishaque and Abdul Shakoor also spoke on the occasion and eulogized the efforts of SRSP which had already accomplished a number of development projects in the valley which hitherto was neglected by the successive governments in the past.–Zahiruddin ]]>
