Polio campaign suspended in Chitral

CHITRAL, Dec 20: As the country saw serial killing of vaccinators, polio campaign in Chitral was also suspended to avoid any untoward incident, health officials here told chitraltoday.net. Dr. Saad Maluk, the Executive District Officer (Health), and Dr. Nazir Khan, Coordinator for the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI), confirmed the suspension of the drive while talking to chitraltoday.net.  Dr. Nazir said, “We had detailed some 347 mobile health teams to administer polio drops to children under the age of five years. Our target population was 65,410 and according to data collected on December 19, some 21,900 children had been given polio drops. However, the position of the remaining children is not clear.” He said they had received data from 10 union councils completely while partial data was received from some other areas. “But we did not get any data from some far-flung areas due to poor condition of communication.” Some 483 lady health workers and 20 lady health supervisors were engaged in the campaign. It may be noted that Chitral has remained polio-free district for the last 18 years. However, it is being feared that if the campaign remained suspended for a long period of time due to poor security, the crippling disease might raise its head, said the EDO.]]>

  1. It is indeed very unfortunate to attack health workers, who knock on every door like a beggar and it is we who burst their heads through bullets. Good to know that Chitral remains free from this particular disease for the last 18 years. It is due to our parents’ great concern about their children that has worked. But security should be provided to the health workers for their safety so that they can accomplish their task with peace of mind.
