Shandur road closed for traffic

GHIZER, Dec 19: After the recent snowfall in upper Chitral and Ghizer district, communication link between the two areas has been disconnected. Besides, the whole area is under a severe cold spell, forcing people to remain indoors most of the day. There is over one foot snow on the Shandur pass and as a result, traffic on the road between Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan is blocked. A number of vehicles are reported to have stranded at different points on the road due to the snowfall. Due to poor communication system, these upper areas of the country remain cut-off from rest of the region. In both the areas of Chitral and Ghizer, there is also shortage of firewood with the available stock being sold at exorbitant rates. Reports said in Chitral, there is also shortage of daily use items due to the closure of the Lowari pass road. The under-construction Lowari tunnel is opened only for three days a week.]]>
