Prisoners' bid to go on hunger strike

CHITRAL, Nov 27: Five of the people from Ayun languishing in Chitral jail on Tuesday went on a hunger strike for a short period. They were arrested for ersisting the transportation of timber from Kalash valleys to Chakdara a few months back. Riaz Ahmed, the superintendent of the jail, said the inmates were protesting against their arrest. They refused to take their breakfast on Tuesday. However, they agreed to call off their strike after District and Sessions Judge Syed Zamrud Shah visited the jail and assured them that justice would be done and the case would be taken up on merit. It may be recalled that more than 20 people from Ayun village were jailed last month after they were booked for their attempt to uproot the forest checkpost in Ayun in January.–Zahiruddin]]>
