Release our men: Ayun residents warn of protest

Report G.H. Farooqui CHITRAL, Nov 9: The people of Ayun have warned the district administration that if their arrested colleagues were not released and cutting of forest was not stopped within one week, they will start a ‘fill the prison’ campaign. The warning was given out at a public meeting held at Ayun under the chair of Qazi Maulana Yahya. The meeting was attended by politicians and notables of the area. The district administration had already imposed section 144 forcing the people to postpone their planned protest and agitation. Before the meeting, the residents held a peaceful rally and reached the polo ground in a procession to register their protest. The speakers on the occasion said: “We obey and respect the orders of the courts and the administration but to express our views and hold protests are our genuine rights.” They demanded of the district administration to immediately impose a ban on cutting of forest and release their arrested colleagues. They said they had been raising their voice in a peaceful way against cutting of forest but the district administration lodged FIR against 53 people and arrested 20 of them who were still languishing in jail. The FIR was registered under the sections of anti-terrorism and maintenance of public order ordinance. The residents challenged section 7 of the ATA in the court of law. The application was later withdrawn on court order. They given the deadline of one week to the administration saying if their demands were not fulfilled within this period, they would take to the streets. Those who spoke on the occasion were Abul Wali Khan Advocate, distinct president of Pakistan Qaumi Party, Maghfirat Shah, former district nazim Chitral, Shahzada Sikandarul Mulk, former Mastuj tehsil nazim, Sartar Ahmad Khan, former tehsil nazim Chitral and Sardar Ahmad Khan.]]>
