People walk against polio

CHITRAL, Oct 12: A large number of people participated in a walk to create awareness about the crippling polio disease here. 

The walk started from the DCO office and ended at the children and women hospital in Xang Bazaar. Students from different schools also took part in the walk. They were carrying banners and placards inscribed with messages to the parents to administer polio drops to their children up to five years of age to eradicate the disease from the country.

A function was also held in the children hospital under the chair of Abdul Mateen, ACO Chitral, while EDO Health Dr Saad Maluk, coordinator EPI Chitral Dr Muhammad Nazir Khan, coordinator national program Dr. Ibrahim, Dr. Israrullah Khan, child specialist Dr Gulzar Ahmad and others were present.

Addressing the ceremony, Dr Gulzar spoke on the polio disease and its prevention. He stressed the participants to never use contaminated water because it was causing different diseases. Abdul Mateen appealed to all parents to cooperate with the health department teams to make Chitral a polio-free district.

Talking to this scribe, Dr. Mohammad Nazir Khan said some 68,117 children would be given polio drops during the three-day door-to-door campaign from Oct 15. He said for this purpose they had detailed 343 mobile teams who will administer polio vaccine with vitamin A capsule to the children.—GH Farooqui
