Speaking at a press conference, Mohammad Khan of Pakistan People’s Party, Siffat Zareen of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Sardar Mohammad said Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani had approved Rs340 million for the road under a special package. They said the road was scheduled to be completed by 2012 but only 10 percent of the work has been done on the project thus far.
They said the Communication and Works Department had paid Rs240 million to contractors. They pointed out that Rs8.8 million were paid to the contractors in the recent past but even then work could not be restarted on the road. The land acquisition officer, they said, was hoodwinking the landowners by paying them low prices while some people were yet to be paid.
They said the old road was also in a dilapidated condition causing hardships to the commuters. They asked the government to immediately initiate an inquiry into the irregularities and ensure early completion of the road.—The News
